How make bets
Betika is a Kenyan sportsbook that has been operating since 2016, with its platform built around the country’s dominant mobile payment system, M-Pesa. In less than a decade, the company has evolved from a local SMS-based betting service into one of Kenya’s three leading bookmakers while expanding its presence across eight additional African markets.

Today, the sportsbook offers pre-match and live sports betting, an online casino, virtual games, and progressive jackpots through its website, mobile apps, SMS, and USSD services.
Licensing
- Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), Kenya: BK-0001117
- Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), Kenya: PG-0001113
The operator is officially available in:
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Uganda
- Zambia
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Ethiopia
One of the operator’s strongest competitive advantages is its pricing. The bookmaker’s average margin is approximately 3.8–4%, making it noticeably lower than that of most domestic competitors.
What Makes Betika Different?
Unlike many international operators, the platform was developed specifically for the Kenyan market rather than being adapted for it later. This local-first approach is reflected in its deep integration with M-Pesa, support for mobile betting technologies, and extensive coverage of domestic sporting events.
In February 2026, the company received the Operator of the Year award at the Blask Awards, further strengthening its reputation within the African betting industry.
According to numerous independent industry reviews, the operator consistently ranks among the top three bookmakers in Kenya, combining strong local expertise with full licensing from the BCLB.
Taxation
Kenya’s gambling tax system has undergone several legislative changes in recent years. As of 2026, Betika customers are subject to the following taxes:
- 5% Deposit Excise Duty – deducted when funds are transferred from a mobile wallet to a Betika betting account.
- 5% Withdrawal Tax – deducted when funds are withdrawn from the betting account to M-Pesa or another supported payment method (introduced under the Finance Act 2025).
- 20% Winnings Tax – deducted from the net winnings after the original stake has been subtracted (effective from 1 July 2026).
In addition, betting operators in Kenya pay a 15% Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) tax. This tax is not charged directly to customers but is reflected in the bookmaker’s overall pricing and odds.
Because Kenyan gambling legislation changes relatively frequently, players are advised to verify the latest applicable tax rates in their Betika account before making large withdrawals.
Refill and withdraw methods

The company does not charge deposit fees. However, under Kenyan tax legislation, a 5% excise duty is deducted from deposits before the funds are credited to the betting account.
Depending on the account level and available payment channel, the maximum deposit limit may range from 140.000 KES to 300.000 KES. Users should check the latest limits within their Betika account, as they may vary.

- the mobile operator's transaction fee (typically 12–33 KES, depending on the withdrawal amount);
- a 5% government withdrawal tax.
