Bets on a draw can be placed on the result of the match in regular time or for each period separately.
It should be understood that a draw in hockey matches is quite an uncommon result.
In NHL games, one draw result occurs in about every fifth match (statistics as of the end of February 2022). At the same time, the odds for a draw are approximately 4.5.
Draw result statistics in the NHL over recent years:
- 2015/16 – 22.36%.
- 2016/17 – 23.54%.
- 2017/18 – 23.29%.
- 2018/19 – 21.32%.
- 2019/20 – 26.92%.
The conclusion that can be drawn from the statistics: betting on a draw in every match is an absolutely losing strategy.
Some clubs end regular time in a draw more often than others. If you don’t keep track of NHL club statistics, follow the link to the official National Hockey League website: NHL Stats.

By following this link, you’ll get to a page with a summary table of statistical data for all NHL clubs. The “OT” column shows the number of overtime games for each club. Recall that in the NHL, overtime is assigned after a draw result in regular time.
According to this table, as of the end of February 2022, the Philadelphia Flyers had the highest number of overtimes – 10 in 52 matches (19.2%). Therefore, the odds for a draw in games involving this team are slightly higher than average. For example, for the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Edmonton Oilers match, the odds were 4.78 (with the average being 4.5).
The indicated odds are below the average draw rate for the Philadelphia Flyers (52/10=5.2). The difference between these odds represents the bookmaker’s margin.
Conclusion: if you simply bet on draws, in the long run, with every fifth winning bet, you will lose: 1000×5 − 1000×4.78 = 220 ₽.
Conclusion: the draw betting strategy in the Line will be unprofitable for you in the long term.

Draw bets in a specific period
This strategy is used in Live mode. You can bet on a draw for the first, second, or third period. The bet wins if, at the end of the selected period, a draw is recorded. What are the risks of period draw bets in hockey matches of the main leagues and tournaments?
Bets on the first period
These are found in major leagues and tournaments such as the Kontinental Hockey League, National Hockey League, European Championships, and the Olympic Games.
In all 2022 Olympic Games matches, a draw in the first period was recorded in the following games:
- USA – Slovakia. First-period score 1:1, the match also ended in a draw (2:2), as did the overtime (0:0). Note that this was already the quarterfinal;
- Sweden – Canada. First-period score 0:0. The Swedes managed to open the score only in the third period. The match ended 2:0. This was also a quarterfinal;
- Semifinal Russia – Sweden. First-period score 0:0. In the remaining periods, each team scored once, and in overtime, Russia secured the win over Sweden;
- Bronze medal match Sweden – Slovakia. First-period score 0:0. Slovakia scored twice in both the second and third periods.
What conclusions can be drawn from this data?
A draw in the first period usually occurs in matches:
- In the playoff rounds of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships, NHL, KHL, and other leagues;
- Between division or conference leaders, etc.;
- Between teams from the same city or region (derbies), as well as “archrivals,” for example, CSKA and SKA (St. Petersburg).
In such matches, the cost of a mistake is very high, so opponents usually play defensively in the first period, studying each other. From this, it can be concluded that if one team scores, the other will try to equalize as quickly as possible to prevent the opponent from building momentum.

Bets on the second period
Analysis of statistical data did not reveal any clear patterns. In the second period, teams usually aim to take the lead or, conversely, to narrow the gap as much as possible. Moreover, players’ physical condition remains close to optimal, especially among team leaders. Draws in the second period, when they occur, should be considered statistical fluctuations.
Bets on the third period
The optimal approach is to bet on a draw in the third period in matches you are following or for which you have real-time match statistics or access to a live broadcast. It’s best to place the wager during the break between the second and third periods to allow time for analysis.
Overall, the draw betting strategy in Live mode requires careful match statistics analysis. On the other hand, it’s enough for every fourth bet to win for you to remain profitable in the long run.
