Most novice and experienced cappers who regularly bet on football match outcomes prefer the “total” bet type. Using this kind of wager allows bettors to win without making complex calculations required to predict the likely winner or exact score of the match.

Definition and types of total bets
A “total” bet is a prediction of certain match statistics (number of goals, corners, yellow or red cards, etc.) recorded during a football match, made either by one team or by both opponents combined.
This betting type is divided into several categories:
- “Total Over”;
- “Total Under”;
- “Individual Total”;
- “Asian Total”;
- “Chasing Total”;
- “Three-way Total”.
“Total Over” betting strategy
This subtype is marked by bookmakers as “Total Over.” The “Over” coefficient is usually listed in the bookmaker’s line for the number of goals scored in a match. The “Over” notation means that both teams will score a total number of goals greater than the figure specified by the bookmaker.
This type of bet is recommended for matches that meet the following criteria:
- both teams play in an attacking style and have no injured key forwards before the match;
- both teams score in 60% of their recent 5–10 matches;
- the bookmaker offers odds of at least 1.40 for the “Total Over” outcome;
- the away team has conceded goals in at least three of its last five matches;
- the teams have scored in at least 3 out of their last 5 head-to-head games.
“Total Under” betting strategy
This subtype is marked by bookmakers as “Total Under.” The “Under” coefficient is usually listed in the bookmaker’s line for the number of goals scored in a match.
This type of bet is recommended for matches that meet the following criteria:
- both teams prefer a defensive style of play and have no injured defenders or holding midfielders before the match;
- each team has kept a clean sheet or conceded no more than one goal in 3 of their last 5 matches;
- in 60% of their last 5 head-to-head games, both teams kept a clean sheet at least once;
- adverse weather conditions are expected during the match (rain, snow, high temperature);
- top scorers are absent from both teams’ line-ups;
- bookmakers offer odds higher than 2.40 for the teams’ victories.

“Individual Total” betting strategy
“Individual Total” combines the characteristics of both “Over” and “Under” bets.
“Individual Total” refers to the performance metrics of a single team. It can be placed on various statistics such as the number of corners, penalties, fouls, or cards (red or yellow). Most often, an “individual total” bet is placed on the number of goals scored by one of the teams.
Bettors often use “Individual Total” in accumulator (express) bets to increase the total odds. To win such bets, the best strategies are those applied to “Over” and “Under” markets.

“Asian Total” betting strategy
The “Asian Total” includes features of both individual and overall totals (Over/Under). A distinctive feature of this subtype is that the total contains a two-decimal fraction (examples: Over 2.25, Under 1.75).
When calculating an “Asian Total,” the bet is split into two parts. For example, Over 2.25 divides into Over 2.0 and Over 2.5.
The final result is based on both outcomes (for Over 2.0, there can be three results – refund/win/loss, while for Over 2.5 only two – win or loss).
There are no unique systems for using the “Asian Total.” It can be applied in the same way as individual or overall Over/Under totals.
“Chasing Total” betting strategy
The “Chasing Total” strategy has a particular advantage — it simplifies match outcome analysis. It comes in two forms:
- single;
- global.
The single “Chasing Total” strategy involves placing “Individual Total Over” or “Individual Total Under” bets on the same team outcome (win, loss, draw, number of goals) across several matches. The bet amount doubles after each loss until the first win in the series.
The global “Chasing Total” strategy involves betting on the same outcome (“Individual Total Over” or “Under”) for one team throughout an entire season. It often works best with top clubs from European leagues. When applied to weaker teams, the bettor risks depleting their bankroll before achieving a win if the losing streak lasts too long.
“Three-way Total” betting strategy
This subtype combines the features of “Over” and “Under.” However, its distinguishing feature is that the numerical total is always an integer (not fractional) value in bookmaker lines.
For effective use of the “Three-way Total,” bettors are advised to consider the following:
- both teams play either in an attacking or defensive style;
- no key players are missing before the match;
- both teams have finished 60% of their last 5–10 matches with scores that would have resulted in either a win or refund for the bet.
